Established in 1962, the Department of Commerce has grown into one of the largest and most dynamic departments of the college, with more than 1800 students currently enrolled. It continues to play a pivotal role in nurturing academic excellence, professional competence, and research culture.

Initially offering only the B.Com. Program, the Department expanded its academic horizon by introducing the M.Com. Program in 1971, which remains one of the few grant-receiving postgraduate courses under Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU).

In alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP 2020), the Department has successfully implemented the NEP curriculum from 2023, ensuring a multidisciplinary, flexible, and student-centric approach to commerce education. This reform has further strengthened skill development, entrepreneurship orientation, and career readiness.

To meet the rising demand for professional education, the Department has introduced programs such as BBA and BCA (affiliated to SPPU). It has also pioneered skill-based learning through innovative courses like B.Voc. in Accounts and Taxation, Diploma in Banking, and the establishment of a CS Centre. Students are further enriched through practical training opportunities in collaboration with reputed organizations such as Bajaj.

The Department is recognized as a Research Centre under SPPU, with 6 eminent research guides mentoring scholars for M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees. The Department has achieved an h-index of 9, reflecting impactful and quality research in the areas of banking, accounting, management, and administration. Faculty members and researchers have published several books and numerous papers in reputed national and international journals.

The Department is supported by robust academic infrastructure, including a full-fledged Departmental Library with rich reference resources, and a well-equipped Computer Laboratory that facilitates ICT-enabled teaching, learning, and research.

The highly qualified and experienced faculty have pioneered several innovative practices such as the Commerce Festival, Commerce Laboratory, and Entrepreneurship Club, which have been widely adopted by other colleges affiliated to SPPU.

Over the years, the Department has successfully organized a number of National, International, and State-level seminars, conferences, and workshops, and published proceedings with ISSN/ISBN, alongside a large volume of research articles.
