This esteemed department operates under the aegis of Sangamner Nagarpalika Art’s, D. J. Malpani Commerce, and B. N. Sarda Science (Autonomous) College, Sangamner, commonly referred to as Sangamner College, Sangamner.

Established in 1965, the department was created to address the educational needs of rural and tribal students in the region, offering B.Sc., M.Sc., and a Research Centre in Physics (Ph.D.), affiliated with Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), Pune. The department boasts well-equipped experimental research and teaching laboratories. To enhance its capabilities, it has successfully garnered funding from various prestigious agencies, including UGC, ASPIRE, BCUD, ISRO, DST-FIST, and the DBT-STAR scheme.

The department takes pride in its substantial enrolment at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels within the SPPU, Pune framework. Since July 2020, it has offered an Autonomous B.Sc. in Physics and M.Sc. programs. Additionally, the department provides a doctoral research program (Ph.D.) in Physics and Nanomaterial for exceptionally motivated students aspiring to forge a career in research.

Notable scholars such as Prof. P. B. Chaudhari, Prof. S. P. Borole, Prof. M. R. Marathe, Prof. S. D. Malwadkar, Prof. R. G. Pathare, and Dr. R. V. Zaware have previously led the department. Currently, Prof. Dr. S. N. Dalvi serves as the Head of Department. Rangnath Pathare, former head of the Physics Department, a respected Marathi writer, steered the committee to promote Marathi as a classical language and received the Sahitya Akademi award in 1999.

The department features a well-established research centre affiliated with Savitribai Phule Pune University, renowned for its impressive research profile, which includes patents and publications in esteemed high-impact international journals.

All faculty members are highly qualified, with some of holding post-doctoral degrees and actively engaging in research in the domains of Nanomaterial and Renewable Energy Sources, alongside their regular teaching and various curricular-extracurricular activities. Numerous research projects funded by UGC, ISRO, and SPPU have been successfully completed by faculty members. The department has amassed a significant number of national and international patents, research papers, and scholarly books, thereby enhancing its prestige. It has been honoured with various accolades, including the Best Department award under the 5S scheme, as well as gold and silver medals under the student research scheme, and recognition for research projects in the Avishkar research project competition.

Dr. Prashant Baviskar has elected as Young Associate by Maharashtra Academy of Science.

Prof. Dr. S. N. Dalvi has received the “Best Teacher Award” from Savitribai Phule Pune University and has also served as the Director of Student Welfare and Programme Coordinator of the National Service Scheme (NSS) at SPPU, contributing significantly to academic, social, and cultural endeavours.

The department has organized a myriad of International and National Conferences, Symposiums, Workshops, Webinars, and Faculty Development Programs in collaboration with MNRE, MHRD, HRDC-SPPU, among others. Furthermore, it has initiated an innovative program named “CONVERGENCE,” aimed at inspiring school students and teachers from rural and tribal areas to cultivate an interest in Physics through hands-on experiences. Our department is honoured to function as a network institute of the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), a constituent unit of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Department of Space, Government of India, and conducts outreach programs in collaboration with them. Our department takes pride in its accomplished alumni, who have made a name for themselves in their respective fields. Many of our former students have achieved outstanding success, with numerous SET, NET, GATE and IIT-JAM qualifiers among them.
